Original App: Here! His game info post is here, and has a good rundown of what's happened to him in-game as well.
Game Summary: Save the Earth is a game in which characters are reincarnated as normal humans or animals and gain back bits and pieces of their old lives through "Echoes" triggered by situations that closely parallel situations for canon or proximity to various plot-based items and events. Reincarnates also have access to a secret network accessed via a string of numbers that pop into their heads when their first Echo hits. If a surface can have the number written on it or a device can have the number input into it, the network can be accessed. Because of this, the reincarnates tend to refer to themselves as the Numbered. The Numbered have been tasked with--what else?--saving the Earth.
How long was your character in Game: Torin joined in early January of 2014 and stayed through endgame in May 2015, so about a year and a half.
History of Character in their Game: Torin started out life as a parrot (an endangered Red and Blue Lory) named Tater who lived in a zoo aviary. He remained just a normal parrot for the first six years of his life until some cybernetically-enhanced members of a local gang, the Blood Keys, came through the aviary on a zoo trip. There was no trouble, but the proximity to the Blood Keys triggered something in the parrot's mind: he became sentient. The parrot spent the next month watching and observing the goings-on of the network, as well as the way the zoo operated. Though he could not speak, he started trying to teach himself how to read off of zoo brochures, paperwork, and the network itself. He also began plotting his escape from the zoo, sneaking out from the walk-through aviary attraction by slipping into a basket underneath a child's stroller. The basket was already filled with colorful toys, and the brave little parrot blended right in. Once the stroller was out of the zoo, he took flight.
Getting free from the zoo and looking out on the wider world triggered something else for him: the ability to speak. At last, he could communicate with the network he'd been stalking. His first action was to inquire about the Ice Age, for he was a tropical parrot who had the misfortune to emerge from his safe little aviary in the middle of a cold winter in New Jersey, and the sudden shock of the cold had triggered memories of the monster that had, in Torin's canon, caused the Ice Age. The parrot's first post to the network was therefore asking the rest of the Network why nothing had been done to stop this monster, and it was at this point that he was introduced to the concept of winter.
More importantly, he was introduced to the concept of the Kyoryugers thanks to a conversation with Thomas Akagi, who gave the little lost parrot his first place to stay. The Kyoryugers were the team that the parrot had founded in order to fight such monsters, and Thomas was a guy who had been an extreme Super Sentai fanboy in his past life. He was able to use his fanboy knowledge to figure out who and what Tater the parrot might have once been, though he kept it to himself at first. In the meantime, Tater also met other talking animals, such as Cinderella the unicorn and Mimi the talking cat. The latter was determined to eat him, but he had no fear, believing cats to be slow and stupid anyway. Mimi did not do much good at dispelling the latter notion, and this was the start of a relationship that probably could have easily devolved into some sort of Tom and Jerry thing if Tater hadn't felt sorry for the poor, stupid cat who clearly had delusions of grandeur. (A cat actually catching a bird of his intelligence and skill? Absurd.)
Tater also started to remember things that had defined who he was in another lifetime. The clever parrot snuck into a natural history museum, only to find that he knew a great deal about the dinosaurs on display because he'd walked among them at one time. He remembered the name Torin, decided that sounded a great deal more dignified than Tater, and he started transitioning into using it instead. He also continued making friends. Julien, one of the humans on the network, liked birds (and, unknown to Tater, was on his way to becoming one), and he was even willing to get the cold-natured parrot a little parrot-sized sweater to brave the Locke City winters with. Aeronwen was another talking animal new to the network, and Torin got along well with the horse. The presence of all the talking animals on the network led Torin to try to rally them into some sort of group, just as he'd once rallied the Kyoryugers into a team, though herding cats, horses, and ferrets was easier said than done. Still, Torin enjoyed talking with all the other animals.
Torin also made friends with a boy named Bakura, and that connection got him taken on a few adventures here and there, when other, more sensible humans would decide that maybe some places weren't meant for small parrots. One such excursion led them into the sewers to look at mysterious pink chunks of stone that had shown up down there, and it was there that Torin experienced a rather unusual Echo--he got his original self's voice back. Since his original self had a very deep voice and he was still a tiny parrot, the effect was more than a little strange. Torin loved it. He could start speaking on the network via audio only, and no one would give him grief for being "just a parrot," which was something he had to deal with on a regular basis from new people. In fact, he accidentally used this skill to talk a cranky old man named Nathaniel into crafting him a parrot-sized elemental staff charged with fire power.
It was around this time that Thomas lost his Echoes, and Torin lost both a roommate and a potential source of Super Sentai knowledge. Fortunately for Torin, Julien put out a call asking for roommates, and Torin jumped at the chance. He was a good roommate, so he thought, even if a parrot who was intelligent enough to use human things would accidentally cause damage to those human things despite his best efforts. Parrot beaks and claws were never meant to be used with telephones or computer keyboards.
The situation in Locke escalated when the reincarnates mounted an attack on an alien that had been working with the corrupt Locke City police and posing a threat to the Numbered and the safety of the city as a whole. When the alien died, a gigantic stone snake emerged from deep underground and began wreaking havoc on the city. As it rampaged, it shed scales that turned into smaller, though still large, snakes on their own. It was in this moment that Torin knew he'd fought gigantic building-sized monsters many times before and that he could handle this, but he didn't have time for much thought. He had to save people. He also had to deal with a sudden explosion of feathers as his coloration shifted to something that matched his original form more closely. In the course of his adventures during the snake attack, he ran into Julien once more, and the other was showing more overt signs of turning into some kind of bird. He also encountered a businessman named Jackson Isaka, who was testing out some newfound psychic abilities while dealing with the chaos, and the two of them teamed up in an attempt to help. Torin also met up with Doyle, a human who had turned into and gotten stuck as a dinosaur. Fortunately, Torin spoke fluent dinosaur, and he was for a time the only one who could understand Doyle without the benefits of written communication.
Shortly after that, Torin got the best Echo ever--he grew scaly arms and hands. It was a transitional stage he could appreciate; though it meant he couldn't go out in public quite as easily, it meant that he could now operate things like lightbulbs, door knobs, and video game consoles. The latter led him to attempt going on Xbox Live in an attempt to make new friends. He regretted that decision. The new development excited his friend Aeronwen, who thought he might be some sort of gryphon. He also ended up moving in with Doyle, who was still stuck as a dinosaur, where he helped out as a live-in translator. Torin also ran into Jack again, who had turned into some kind of peacock monster and also gotten stuck. Torin was more than happy to help out the new nonhumans; he understood their plight quite well.
The Numbered--and the whole of Locke--also found themselves under attack from an absurd source in the form of suddenly-hostile inanimate objects. Torin fought things like angry toothpicks, but eventually, the attacks amped up to the point that there was a rampaging angry car-monster tearing through the streets. Torin tried to rally Doyle to fight it, but the attempt had to be cut off when Torin found himself trying to prevent an increasingly angry Doyle from causing more damage, even going so far as to swat the dinosaur over the nose with the flat of his tiny parrot-sized sword. It was at this point that the parrot experienced another odd physical change--he found his beak lined with sharp dinosaur-like teeth.
Torin also tried to offer swordsmanship lessons to the Network as a whole, because he'd Echoed back a great deal of skill in this area. He tried to make use of these skills and the tiny letter opener sword he'd repurposed into a functional weapon for his size in infiltrating a mysterious ThunderCorp compound, but he instead ended up spending that effort trying to get Mimi the Cat out of there in one piece. (Silly cat, thinking she could do spy things with no wings...) Torin's tiny size and his status as a parrot meant that he didn't have too many takers when it came to sword lessons, as most of the Numbered didn't see how he could do much good at instruction.
The parrot had been enchanted by the idea of getting a job and earning human money so that he could take care of his own needs and not have to rely on other people. He'd been asking about it here and there as soon as he got his hands, but it wasn't until a man named Lazarus put out an open call on the Network offering jobs to people who could not otherwise find work thanks to the changes they'd had as a result of their numbers. Torin jumped at the chance, and he found himself working at a local coffee shop called Espresso Yourself. Because he was so tiny, there wasn't a whole lot he could do. His official job was to serve as entertainment, chatting with customers who were fascinated by the intelligent parrot. Torin also made it a point to watch and learn--he knew how to operate many of the coffee machines, even if he lacked the mass to do much. He also tried to clear tables as best he could; if customers left behind relatively light pieces of trash, he could handle that.
He was not to be deterred from working, and he was one of the first to respond when Lazarus, who often went by the alias of L on the network, put out a call saying that Espresso Yourself had been vandalized. Torin swiped a broom and dustpan off of a doll, and he rushed to help clean up the mess. There were other incidents of anti-Numbered grafitti and actions, and Torin tried to help clean up as best he could, despite his size. Things got so bad that the little parrot was actually personally targeted by some mafia thugs as he flew around town. Said thugs got the fright of their life when the parrot had a fairly explosive growth spurt during their attack, suddenly growing into a bird-dinosaur-man in an explosion of feathers. Another Numbered named Toushirou was nearby, and the two of them made quick work of the goons.
Torin adapted quickly to his new height. Sure, he had to get used to wearing clothing, and anything he hadn't Echoed back needed to be custom-tailored, but that was a small adjustment to make. He was quick to jump into more active duty at Espresso Yourself, which proved to be quite useful for the coffee shop when the mafia started striking at more of its employees. Several Numbered were kidnapped, among them, L, whom Torin was becoming better friends with. He was quick to try to go to the rescue, and he was quicker still to provide the support his friend needed in order to heal. He took on a management position at the coffee shop, and he was glad for it--it was just one more way he could make himself useful. He continued trying to help as many people on the Network as he could. Many of them just needed advice, and some, like Doyle, needed help in dealing with weird physical changes.
Torin also Echoed back a very important item--his GigaGaburevolver. He knew the gun worked with the strange batteries he'd been receiving here and there, and once he had the chargers back, he was in business. With the help of L and a man named Lyall, Torin tested these items in the park late at night. He transformed into Kyoryu Silver, the Radiant Hero, for the first time, which was great, and then he accidentally released fart gas everywhere with the Ovirappoo Beast Battery and accidentally made a hobo fall madly in love with him through the use of the Stymero Beast Battery. (No one is perfect.) He was quite glad he didn't test these things under battlefield conditions.
He sadly had an occasion to use them again not long after; the anti-Numbered sentiment among the residents of Locke City had been growing, and Anthony, a teenaged zombie, was beaten to death by an angry mob. Torin attended the funeral, and he lurked around the outskirts of it, quietly using the Stymero battery to turn gatherings of protestors into love-ins. He also started using it to take care of unruly customers at Espresso Yourself, though he was forced to stop that practice when one of the patrons in question started hitting on Tony, one of the employees. (Torin gave Tony the day off after that one...)
The tension with the mafia continued to get worse, with Torin having to help talk L out of setting a fatal trap for the mafia when some leaked information warned of yet another strike on Espresso Yourself. Instead, the trap turned from one involving explosives into one involving the police, and several mafia goons were rounded up. Said goons tried to start a fire in the place, but Torin in his guise as Kyoryu Silver (along with other Numbered) was ready for them, and he put out the worst of the fires with some extra fire extinguishers he'd brought in earlier. There was one last bit of mafia violence with the Numbered coming together to bring down Albero, the mafia boss himself, and things finally started to settle down a bit in Locke. There was some initial violence at first as the criminal elements of the city waged war over Albero's territory, but things eventually quieted down.
Torin took this opportunity to try to provide for others less fortunate than himself; he adopted three parrots from a parrot rescue. The birds were ones that had been poorly socialized, and they didn't quite fit in with humans, nor did they quite fit in with other parrots. Torin felt he knew that feeling, and the parrots warmed up to him quickly. Torin thought that would be the most exciting thing to happen to him over the holiday season, but no. He Echoed back Bragigas, his Voltasaur partner, albeit at a reduced size. Bragigas proved to be rather difficult to hide, and Torin was forced to place the dinosaur under the protective custody of the FBI, as the Gundam pilots before him had done. They at least seemed more reasonable than the military.
There was a bit of trouble in Lapland, where strange Santas and Grinches were kidnapping children. Though Torin hated the cold, he went over there in an attempt to help save the kids. As fate would have it, the Santas were so focused on the age of their victims that they thought a seven-year-old birdman was just the same as a seven-year-old human child, and they took Torin right to where the children were being held. While there, Torin was able to get a good look at a gigantic creature frozen in a block of ice under Lapland, and he was told that the Santas were a part of it. The new year also saw Torin's friend Julien finally making the change into an actual giant bird, and Torin was quick to try to offer all the comfort he could. It was a strange thing for Torin; he and Julien really were moving in opposite directions. What can you say to that?
The Numbered also started to see another bit of potentially disastrous PR in the form of doppelgangers, doubles that behaved in a manner contrary to how the Numbered usually carried themselves. Torin's proved to be a problem, for it shared his skills with a sword yet did not share his reverence for living things. The double grew bored, and it tried to get people to call out hits on others so it could have something to do. After being made extremely uncomfortable by L's doppelganger--Torin was not used to getting hit on--Torin set out to find his own, fearing that it might have done something to the real L. He was able to find said double at a castle in Germany, where it was already engaged in combat with one Aaron Strider. The two of them were able to defeat said double.
Not long after, things began to escalate--pink pulses of Echo-giving light lit up the sky far more often, and strange animals were starting to emerge from underneath the Earth's crust. Bragigas experienced several growth spurts and regained his ability to shift into his humanoid fighting form of Gigant Bragi-Oh. The Voltasaur returned to his original gigantic canon size and the Kyoryugers' Spirit Base within him opened up on the day the moon itself turned into a giant snake to fend off alien spaceships.
The day the moon changed, Torin made a visit to the zoo he'd grown up in. There, he calmly explained the situation to zoo personnel. Things were escalating quickly, and he wanted to keep the other parrots safe. They could give him the parrots in exchange for money--because he'd learned quite quickly that humans do love money--or he would do something more drastic. The zoo agreed to sell Torin the parrots, and he barely had time to get them settled in the Spirit Base before the alien invasion began in earnest.
Torin and Bragigas fought long and hard against the alien ground troops, occasionally running into other Numbered, like Torin's old friend Jackson Isaka, here and there. Torin also returned to the zoo and freed all of the animals in an attempt to give them a fighting chance against the aliens as well. While this went on, Torin encountered his friend Areonwen--who had started going by her old name of Sayvil--and the two battled aliens together. When it came out that it might be possible to try to negotiate with the aliens' leader, Torin jumped at the chance. He'd seen enough violence, and he was ready to try to talk the aliens into leaving. This led him into space where he had an interesting discussion with the supremely powerful alien leader known only as the Boy. Torin essentially explained where babies come from and introduced the concept of adoption to the Boy, and this, along with many other simultaneous conversations that other Numbered had with him, convinced him to call off Earth's invasion. The Earth had been saved.
How did they change from their canon personality wise (Please explain what caused it to happen?) The biggest change to Torin's personality from canon is that he's got a very parrotlike perspective on some things. He was born a parrot, and he stayed a parrot for quite some time. He still holds a few parrotlike behaviors near and dear to his heart, though he's at the stage at which he knows what is and isn't acceptable among humans. He'll hide the shameful bits. (The humans must never know that he still enjoys shredding cardboard boxes with his beak from time to time.)
While the canon Torin was incredibly lonely, this Torin has done a great deal more to prevent himself from becoming quite so lonely. He's better at dealing with people directly, rather than with hanging back and encouraging a few handpicked individuals to go out and fight where he cannot. Were he to form a team of Kyoryugers now, he'd be right there leading the charge with them, for what general won't go fight with his troops? He's more likely to try to take on an outright leadership role rather than an advisory and mentorly one, if only because his current life has taught him the value of stepping up and doing what needs to be done. He delegates responsibility well, particularly when he can work with people he trusts, but he has trouble sitting back and staying out of things. Doing that made sense when he was a smaller, relatively fragile parrot, but he's bigger and stronger now.
His efforts to prevent himself from becoming as lonely as his canon self also show in the way he has adopted three normal parrots from a local parrot rescue. These are birds whose behavior leaves them unsuited to get along with most humans or with most birds--they straddle a grey area that Torin readily understands. He's fond of these three, and they've flourished since coming to live with him.
He still likes mentoring people, and he will try to offer advice where he can. Yet every so often, something will slip in there that is a startling reminder of where he started as a parrot. (Do not ask him for dating advice. Just don't. He's all about the weird dances and the bright colors.)
Thanks to the way in which he received his Echoes, he doesn't quite have the full range of regrets the canon Torin has towards the Deboss Army. This Torin knows his other self was originally a Deboss, but he's able to distance himself better from it. That wasn't him, and that's not going to be him. He's good. It is not a thing he is proud of on behalf of his other self, and it is not something he would announce to the world, but it isn't something that will render him unable to act if exploited properly. Though that was canon Torin's worst fear, this Torin's own worst fear is going back to what he once was--just an ordinary parrot. He values his sentience and the gift of rational thought, and the idea that this could be taken away from him again is a troubling one.
Canon Torin's worst fear was that something would come along and exploit his original nature as a Deboss. This Torin's worst fear is that he will lose his Echoes and become nothing more than a normal parrot. The worst part of this fear is that he doesn't worry for himself, but he worries for those he cares about and how this might have an effect on them. As a parrot, he wouldn't know what had gone wrong, but his friends still would. Plus, the thought of being rendered unable to help eats at him.
His time working in Espresso Yourself has taught him the fine art of dealing with the public. On one hand, he's good with diplomacy. On the other, he's easily exasperated by people treating him as some sort of lesser being simply because he is not human, and he doesn't tolerate discrimination well. That said, he's also smart enough to use this when he has to. Difficult customers are made uncomfortable by the big bird-lizard thing? Good, because the big bird-lizard thing will make absolutely certain those customers shape right up.
How did they change from their canon physically (Please explain what caused it to happen?): Physically, not much, if anything, is different. He passed through several stages of being a parrot before hitting his canon form once more. Torin's body is much younger than it was, though since he was immortal in canon, that doesn't make much of a difference for him. It is important to note that he never passed through the canon stage at which he was dealing with an old injury from fighting Deboss--he's always been fit and able to fight.
Powers: Torin is a skilled swordsman. He even has his own signature finishing move, the Torinity Strazor, which will fire a triangle-shaped burst of enemy at the target before Torin flies in for a finishing slash. His personal sword, the Feather Edge, will come to its wielder wherever he may be; he simply has to hold out a hand and call for it.
He can fire a golden beam of energy from his hands and is capable of teleportation. However, he did not get the teleportation ability back in full. He can only teleport into and out of the Spirit Base...which is a non-issue in this game scenario, because Bragigas will be small enough that the Spirit Base is once more closed off. (But hey, at least Torin's house will strongly resemble that inside.)
Torin has the ability to use one of Bragigas's Beast Batteries (when charged) in conjunction with his GigaGaburevolver in order to transform into Kyoryu Silver, the Radiant Hero. In this form, he's stronger and faster, and his wings somehow become energy projections
Possessions: Torin's most notable possession is Bragigas, his Voltasaur partner, who will be scaled down to the maximum size a pet can be here--Bragigas is normally pretty massive, and I'm thinking he'd be the size of a baby giraffe (so, about seven feet tall at the top of his head). One tiny, parrot-sized staff of flames; it's a twig that was enchanted to function as a flame-throwing magic staff. He also has a collection of swords, ranging from repurposed letter openers to more solid, human-sized broadswords, as well as Feather Edge, his personal weapon. He has seven parrots: three that he adopted from a rescue, and the four he grew up with in the zoo. He's got his GigaGaburevolver and a handful of Beast Batteries (three of Bragigas's, one of Ovirappoo's, one of Stymero's, and one of Gurumonite's), as well as a charger for those. He will also have a stack of random romance novels and a few assorted DVDs he finds particularly interesting.
Please provide three samples from your previous game, at least one will have to be third person with context:
Sample One: But she never asked if I was a parrot!
Sample Two: Torin, no, this is not the best way to deal with unreasonable customers.
Sample Three: Happy birthday!
Notes: Bii's apping in StE's Sayvil, and we'd like for her and Torin to have a place together.
